Carter: What do you mean?

Elizabeth: Well, the cornrows really don’t fit into the culture of our company.

Carter: Well, I can take them out.

Elizabeth: Really? What would your hair look like if you took out the cornrows – is it frizzy, or is it like Oprah?

Young mom who was a heroin addict has been clean for a year and is about to regain custody of her daughter tomorrow.  She is speaking to her therapist and confesses that she placed herself in jeopardy by going to a junkie friend’s apartment,  which triggered her desire to do drugs again. Has script.

Sam: Final presentation.

Changed significantly since first presentation – much shorter and lacking in detail about coming to this country and having a daughter.  Thirty-nine year old waitress is being fired by young guy who has taken over the restaurant she works at and wants to make it young and hip.  Will turn in her script tomorrow.

Modi: Final presentation

Last day of school but not ready to give final scene with Gus.

Seventeen year old who is pregnant from being raped by her stepfather confronts her bullies at school.

Twenty-four year old brother confronts his slacker eighteen year old brother about his grades and asking him to buy alcohol for him – this after they lost their father to a drunk driver.

Will give me script tomorrow.

Asked questions about who the characters are; where are they, who are they talking to, what do they want, what is central conflict? 

Initial Presentations: 

Modi: "Ava Montgomery", fifteen year old girl who is seven months pregnant; raped by her step-father; ridiculed by other students and called names - like "slut". "Ava" finally snaps during class and rages at her tormentors. 

Beverly: "Erin", thirty-one years old, desperately wants children, but is has been  told that she is sterile. She is in the doctor's office.

Miriam: "Ali Marie", married, has two children, her father was involved with the drug cartels. He abandoned her when she was thirteen because she wasn't a boy.  She was taken in and raised by a kindly family who owned her favorite ice cream place. Years later, she is now the kingpin of the cartel and she has set up a surprise visit with her dad to reveal that she did what he thought only a son could do - take over and run the drug cartel.

Meditative Walk as character

Students walk about on the darkened stage, imagining walking down the street as their character as a child, smelling the aromas, the odors of the big city street, the odors of the small town, the trails of the wilderness – where ever the character grew up. As they walk, the students as their character are hearing the sounds of their home – the big city, the village, the farm, the wilderness – as they walk as children. The students, as they walk, feel the air on their faces – the fetid heat of a crowded slum in India, or the cold of a New York winter, or the fragrant cooling breeze of a forest.

Now they are older – teenagers – and as they walk about they hear, see, smell, feel, even taste their surroundings. Perhaps they have moved away to go to college, to find work, to marry. What do they see, smell, touch, feel, taste as they move through the world?

Now they are in their twenties, moving through the world – with successes and the baggage of losses, of defeat.  They might have families, and their families may be a source of joy, comfort, solace, security, or a source of pain, loss, conflict, or confinement.

The students move through the years and spaces as their characters.

Now, the students sit down and write their impressions, thoughts, feelings, images, words, snippets of phrases, stories, etc.

1^st Act: Common Room in College

Freshmen Orientation – Beverly, the college dean, is  leading a tour of the common room for the freshmen girls. Cooper, campus nerd, is there trying to study.  A group of popular kids are pointedly excluding him and planning a party.

2^nd Act: Wild party in dorm. Cooper complains to the T.A., played by Christian, who tells the kids to quiet  down. Beverly shows up as the dean with Cooper, and the kids immediately put on the “good studious kids” routine. Makenzie, who was in the bathroom, comes out, not knowing what’s going on, and spoils it when she starts yelling “Where’s the music? What happened to the party?”  Beverly, enraged, tells the kids to report to the dean’s office first thing tomorrow.

3^rd Act: The next day in the Dean’s office. The kids are very angry with each other – everyone is blaming and arguing with each other.  Cooper enters and the kids begin yelling at him. Dean Beverly enters and tells them to “pipe down” because if it hadn’t been for him, they would have been all expelled. Beverly tells them he was the one who pleaded with her  not to expel them. After she leaves, he says he just wanted to be friends with them, that’s all. When they reluctantly agree to be his friends, he gets overly excited and ruins it.

Finish the rest of the scenes tomorrow.

Hospital: a woman tells the nurse to pull the plug on a comatose friend

Jahayra: the woman tells the nurse to pull the plug

Katia:  the woman in a coma

Taraz: nurse but basically turned the scene into a scene between Jahayra and him. He argued with her that he couldn’t do that without proper authorization from the next of kin.

Subtext:

Jahayra was the reason Katia was in a coma. She tripped Katia and made her fall down the stairs.

Katia is in love with Jahayra, and  is not aware of Jahayra’s true feelings.
