Into the Woods Contract

Into the Woods 2018 Contract

Into the Woods opens Friday, May 11 @ 7p.m. and runs May 11th, 12th, 13th, and May 18th, 19th, and 20th, Fridays and Saturdays @ 7 pm and Sundays @ 2 pm.

Into the Woods, a musical by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine is a retelling of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, in which we go into the woods to find our dreams and in the process we find ourselves.  The story takes strands from our familiar fairy tales Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and several others and intertwines them - the Baker and his wife have been cursed by the witch with childlessness because the Baker’s father had stolen from the Witch’s garden. In order to lift the curse, the Baker and his wife must give her a cow as white as snow, a cape the color of blood, hair the color of corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. In the first act all the characters, familiar ones from our favorite tales, get what they wish for, and in the second act, the characters suffer the terrible consequences of their wishes coming true. The musical answers the question - what happens after “happily ever after?’

Auditions will be held in room 601 on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 29th, 31st and February 1st from 3:30 to  5:30. Callbacks will be held on Friday, February 2nd.
The cast will be posted on the doors of 601 and 503 on Monday, February 5th.

Rehearsals will start on Wednesday, February 7th in 601 from 3:30 to 5:30. Rehearsals will be Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30. A rehearsal schedule will be posted listing the days, times, locations, scenes, and the actors called on the play production blog on hollywoodhighschool.net  each Sunday night and on the door of 503 every Monday morning. You are expected to check it each day to know if there have been changes in rehearsals. If you are called for rehearsals you will be working either with Ms. Hertzner on the music in 601 or with Ms. Bridges on the acting in the auditorium.

Ms. Bridges may hold rehearsals during spring break, which runs from March 23rd through April 1st. The cast will receive a rehearsal schedule for spring break in early March. Don’t worry - it won’t be every day,  you will get some days off, and the hours will be civilized - 9 am to  2 pm.  Beginning in April, the rehearsal schedule will step up in intensity and weekend rehearsals will be scheduled in April and May.

During the week of the opening, May 6th - May 12th, we will stay late. Dress rehearsals will end approximately at 9 or 9:30. The shows on Fridays and Saturdays will start at 7 p.m., but please be aware that Into the Woods is a very long play.  The running time is two hours and forty minutes, which means the play will finish at about 9:40. However, before the cast and crew will be dismissed, props must be put away, costumes must be hung up, and the dressing room must be clean.

In order to be eligible to be in the show, you must have at the time of the audition a 2.00 average and you must maintain the 2.00 average throughout the semester.  Everyone’s grades will be checked!

You must be courteous and professional at all times. This means you must be punctual to every rehearsal, that you must stay until you are dismissed, and at the beginning of each rehearsal, you must participate in the exercises and warm-ups for they are integral to the performer’s craft and the production. It also means that you arrive at rehearsal ready to work with your script, music, and pencil and that you honor the deadlines for memorization of your lines, music, and blocking.

Food and drinks, other than water, are strictly forbidden during rehearsal, so do not plan on stopping at 7 Eleven’s or In-and-Out Burger for your fine dining at 3:30.  The food will be confiscated. Cell phones during rehearsals are strictly forbidden and prohibited on stage!

And at all times it is understood that you must behave in a mature, courteous manner with everyone. When the directors and actors are working, the other actors are to be quiet, on task, focused and positive.  No loud talking, no off-topic conversations, and no loud, boisterous playing around when the directors are not working with you.   You may use your downtime productively by learning your lines, your music, or running scenes with other actors, or even (gasp!) doing your homework. Keep outside baggage outside - there is no space in theatre for personal drama.

Unexcused absences from rehearsals and/or tardies will result in dismissal from the production. If you know you will be late or absent, you must give twenty-four hours notice with a note or email from your parent or guardian, along with your parent’s or guardian’s phone number.

The directors retain the right to use their professional discretion in casting and recasting if necessary based on the violation of these rules, and/or the needs of the production.

Sincerely,

Lisa  Hertzner
