Presentations of Rough Draft:
Makenzie: Young woman speaking to drunken, unemployed
father who has fallen into a deep depression after mother left three years
ago. The young woman has kept her
and her father afloat for the past several years by dipping into her college
fund – now the money is all gone and she feels her future with it. She has gone to her grandfather for
money to pay for the electricity. Exhausted, and fearful that her future has
been destroyed, she is telling her father she is leaving to take care of
herself.
Nancy: A Russian émigré who grew up in poverty in Moscow and
has now married a very rich and charismatic Russian co-patriot. They are now
living in Beverly Hills – or were until she murdered him for his infidelities.
She is now talking – wrecklessly – to the police and swearing her innocence.
Michele: Woman who is struggling with her studies and work
while trying to help her mother who is dying of leukemia. Changed it to an
African man who is returning to his homeland to bury his mother who died from
leukemia in America.
Julia: The character is a woman who grew up bullied throughout school because she was poor, but through hard
work and marrying well, is now living in an upper-class neighborhood, where she
still feels unaccepted. Tormented by memories of being bullied in grade school
through high school for being poor, she is devastated when she sees her own
daughter being bullied and ignored by the neighborhood rich kids at her own
birthday party.
Gus: David Clark is in love with a girl he has known for
nine years, but still doesn’t know how to talk to her. Very cute and clever!
Modie: Killed parents by stabbing them and has locked
herself with the dead bodies in their apartment. It’s been several days now and
the supervisor is pounding on the door complaining about the odor. When she
refuses to open the door, he tells her he is going to call the police. She is left in the apartment talking to
the dead parents, taunting them, etc. When the police arrive, she goes to the
door, opens it, with the knife behind her back.
Jess: An old woman, a Holocaust survivor, is suffering from
PTSD as a result of her horrifying experiences during the War. She is invited by a neighborhood to
attend a celebration, but she declines, saying that the company of people now
distress her, and begins to tell the horrifying story of why. As a young girl,
she saw her mother taken away by the Gestapo as the mother tried to save her and her
two younger sisters. She tried to
keep her two younger sisters safe, even hiding them in the walls of their apartment.
But now the Gestapo have come back and are beginning a systematic door to door search
of the apartments, tearing down walls looking for Jews who might be hiding. As
she hears the tearing and screeching of wood splintering from crowbars, she
frantically grabs her two sisters, and makes a crazed, hopeless race across an
open field to some woods nearby. As she nears the woods, with her sisters
behind her, she hears the sound of a volley of bullets. She makes it into the
woods, where she hides behind a tree, but as her eyes scan the fields she does
not see her two sisters. That night, under the blanket of darkness, she
retraces the wake of trampled grass
where she sees the dead bodies of her two sisters, red bullet holes torn
into their backs. After seeing the cruel barbaric insanity of man, she can no longer bear the presence of others.
